On the 18th and 19th of August 2023, SMPK 1 BPK PENABUR held an event called EXPO. An event where students from various schools could come to visit the creative stands created by SMPK 1 students in order to know SMPK 1 and their programs better. Students could also showcase their talents through competitions and performances. This year's EXPO theme is Sparknival, encouraging students to shine and embrace their skills.
Wednesday, 16 August
It was preparation day, 2 days before EXPO, SMPK 1 students were requested to decorate their assigned classes, entirely turning the study-friendly environment into a bright carnival centre. The 8th and 9th graders worked together, grouped based on their programmes, pouring their creative ideas on decorating the class stand from scratch.
While several students were busy decorating their own class stands, some were taken and assigned to help the teachers decorate the stand for each programme. In my case, I decorated the DCP stand, while my classmates transformed the classroom into a treasure hunt game.
Throughout this hectic day, everyone ran here and there, busy preparing for EXPO - rehearsing performances, decorating classes, creating promotion, calculating prices, organising gifts. However, by the end of the day, we managed to successfully decorate 2 classes.
Friday, 18 August
It was the day. Students had came by 6.30 to prepare their stands before opening. By 8.00, the event had started, 4 MCs greeted everyone enthusiastically and was followed by a performance from the modern dance club. After such a lively performance, SMPK 1's principal went on stage to give his opening remarks, followed by a celebration of releasing vibrant balloons to the sky as an official symbol of EXPO's opening.
After the opening, the event was filled with continuous performances of students from SMPK 1 such as modern dances, traditional dances, music performances, cooking demo, as well as taekwondo demonstration. Whereas other students were busy serving customers to play in their stand to earn money. Additionally, the school had provided a bazaar of delicious foods for us tired students.
The day was closed with an exhibition from SMPK 1's alumni who've made an invention which won the school numerous awards. "See The Sound", glasses which are made for the deaf, giving them the ability to have subtitles in the glasses.
Saturday, 19 August
The next day, we've again come to school by 6.30 to prepare the stands. By 8.00, our stand had been overflowed with kids from various schools, waiting in line to play the treasure hunt game we've made.
Meanwhile on the main stage, elementary students compete in singing, spelling, and dancing. Other performances such as wushu, modern dance, traditional dance, and talkshows were also presented.
Additionally, teachers and students were given a free class on using trampolines effectively by a gym company.
Moreover, nearing to the end of the day, Elin from Masterchef, a SMPK 1 alumni, came and gave SMPK 1 a cooking demo where the teachers then followed her to produce the same scrumptious dish.
As the event came to an end, students were just left with the responsibility to clean the classrooms and turn them back into a learning environment. We closed our stand, removed all decorations, cleaned the place, and put the tables back. Finally, we were done with EXPO. It had been an amazingly dreadful 3 days, yet we had fun and learnt a lot - how to manage a business to earn profit, how to cook, how to use a trampoline effectively, and many more.
