2023 Chinese New Year Celebration

Chinese New Year is a traditional holiday in which Chinese people celebrate the start of a new year based on the Chinese calendar. It is a tradition to visit all extended family and reunite, while wishing each other good fortune and prosperity in the coming year using Chinese expresions such as : 万事如意，身体健康，心想事成.

Not only that, but every year a different Chinese zodiac is celebrated, where one only has it's chance again after 60 years. This year, we are celebrating the Year of Rabbit.

Without further ado, here is a rundown of SMPK 1 BPK PENABUR's onsite Chinese New Year 2023 celebration.

SMPK 1 Celebration

On Tuesday, 24th of January 2023, SMPK 1 BPK PENABUR held their first onsite Chinese New Year event after the pandemic. All students and teachers were required to wear a Chinese New Year-themed top.

Students were told to be at school by 6.30 am, where they will first have a half-day class.

The Chinese New Year event officially began at 9 am with an introduction to Chinese New Year itself and its traditions. Multiple videos of their talented students' performances, including singing and instrument playing, were also shown.

Soon later, it was time for an activity. The students were directed to do a specific paper cutting where the results were graded.

Once everyone had completed their paper cutting, students were free to either have their break or watch available performances in the field.

However, after all performances has ended, the biggest event of this Chinese New Year Celebration begins. The "koko and cici of SMPK 1" event, in which a pair from each class (grade 7-9) will represent and win the CNY pageant . The contest includes a runway presentation showcasing their prepared CNY attire as well as a spontaneous QnA for those who make it to the finals.

While waiting for the committee to announce the "koko & cici", the school had an angpao giveaway. The headmaster was to draw several numbers from a concealed box which'll determine the 9 lucky winners who would be rewarded with red pockets containing an amount of money.

Towards the end, the students were surprised by a special, spectacular lion dance performance by some SMPK 1 students. This lasted for a few minutes, after which they held an open photo session with the lion dancers.
